On March 27, 2013, SHEEO sent the following query to the SHEEO Academic Officers:
The Valor Act was recently passed in Massachusetts. Among other provisions, this Act calls for the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to develop a policy requiring each public institution of higher education to develop a set of policies and procedures governing the evaluation of a student’s military occupation(s), military training, coursework, and experience, in order to determine whether academic credit shall be awarded for such experience, training, and coursework. To the greatest extent possible, the Valor Act should provide for consistent application across all twenty-nine public campuses while also being consistent with each institution’s admission standards and the mission of the Commonwealth’s system of public higher education.
What policies and procedures or legislation has your agency or state implemented regarding the evaluation of a student’s military occupation(s), military training, coursework, and experience, to determine academic credit? Please describe these policies and procedures or legislation and provide web links, if appropriate. Any information on lessons learned or best practices would be appreciated, also.
