Meeting Highlights

Roy Romer, former governor of Colorado, former Superintendent of Los Angeles public schools, will discuss his campaign, “Ed in ’08,” to put education at the center of the agenda for the United States and our next President.
Barbara Ischinger, Director of Education Programs, OECD, will share her presentation entitled: Trends in Higher Education Around the World—Key Developments and How the OECD is Responding to Them.
Kenneth A. “Buzz” Shaw, former President of the University of Wisconsin System and of Syracuse University, Erroll Davis, Chancellor, Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and former public utility CEO, and Ann Daley, Executive Director of the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board, and former state budget director, will discuss the challenges facing state policy leaders and the perspectives of different stakeholders.
Jamie Merisotis, newly appointed President/CEO, Lumina Foundation for Education, will discuss “Lumina Foundation’s Goals for Advancing Education Attainment, and How SHEEOs can Help (and be helped by) Lumina in Realizing its Aspirations.”
Three Chief State School Officers (Richard Cate of Vermont, Susan Gendron of Maine, and Rick Melmer of South Dakota; moderated by Robert “Tad” Perry, Executive Director, South Dakota Board of Regents) will reflect on how postsecondary education can help K-12 (and ourselves) in preparing more students for success in college.
Richard D. Legon, President, Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, will share his vision and agenda for strengthening boards and lay leadership in higher education.
• SHEEOs and SHEEO alumni will have an opportunity for in-depth conversation in a “World Café,” along with ample free time for informal sharing.
• The “Business Meeting” will deal with routine “business” expeditiously, while providing more opportunities to discuss substantive issues raised by the program committee reports.
