SHEEO’s summer intern program allows graduate students and new PhDs in higher education, or other policy-related fields, to join the staff and assist with current SHEEO projects, or expand upon their own research. For three summers, two to three interns have been offered paid research positions at the SHEEO offices for an 8-12 week period between May and September.
Interns research and write about higher education policy topics of state and national interest. Since 2002, seven SHEEO summer interns have produced or contributed to the following projects:
Chris Rasmussen, University of Michigan, worked on the Tuition & Fee Survey resulting in the report, State Tuition, Fees and Financial Assistance Policies, 2002-03.
Julian Vasquesz Heilig, Stanford University, helped update the Compendium of Resources on Teacher Quality, found
in SOAR.
Angela Boatman, University of Michigan, administered the 2005 updates of the Issue Priorities and Trends Survey and
the Tuition and Fee Survey. The results of the Issue Priorities and Trends Survey were also published in an issue of Network News.
Malaika McKee-Culpepper, University of Minnesota, developed a report related to her personal research, called Social Marketing: Higher Education.
Steve Culpepper, University of Minnesota, also produced a report based on his own research: Incarceration and
Higher Education.
Janet Kier Lopez, University of North Carolina, spent the summer writing a report studying anticipated changes in demographic trends over the next fifty years and their policy implications for SHEEOs and other higher education policy professionals, entitled The Impact of Demographic Changes on United States Higher Education: 2000-2050.
David Tandberg, Pennsylvania State University, assisted Paul Lingenfelter in writing an article on the financing of
public colleges and universities for the American Education Finance Association’s upcoming Handbook of Research
in Educational Finance and Policy. He also authored a white paper which analyzed different measures of state higher education spending and state general fund expenditures, entitled A Comparison of Measures of State Higher
Education Funding, and participated in the generation of State Profiles.
Jacob Fowles, University of Kentucky, assisted in the development of SHEEO's upcoming State Profiles. |
